Invitations may include recipes whenever there is fear that a limited menu contains an entrée or side dish which may contain one or more ingredients which may be a problem for some guests.
This may be done out of concern for food allergies or other dietary issues. There is also the possibility that some guests may not know what to expect from an ethnic theme party. Sushi may be scary for those with no particular fondness for raw fish. The inclusion of the recipe can reassure guests that the ingredients are varied and egg or vegetable sushi is also available.
It could also point out that although the theme is Chinese New Year the food has a decidedly Americanized ingredient list. It could go a long way toward pointing out that 1000 year old eggs aren't nearly that old. Also ethnic foods which are not frequently found in mall food courts can has perfectly tantalizing ingredients once the nature of these is fully revealed.
It may also be a gift of sorts to offer the recipe for some of the dishes at a special occasion before the guests ask for them. It is often the case that these will be requested especially when the hostess has prepared the menu and food herself. Including the recipes in invitations or placing them on the buffet table is a nice gesture.
Recipes may be the artwork on an invitation in some rare cases. If guests are being invited to a family reunion in a farm town that most have regrettably moved away from a secret recipe might be good front art. The invitations to the family might have a special nostalgic feel if an old family favorite is preserved on this memento. An old treat like dried apple cake might be just the right touch.
